Ground-Sky Photography

Ground-Sky Photography is a hobby for a group of seriously dedicated motorsport enthusiasts based in Auckland. Like many good enterprises it began almost by chance with Cully Paterson and Nick Little following the Targa Rally in 2001. Using Philip Adamson's Canon digital camera and aiming simply to take some good shots of him competing in the event, the results turned out far better than expected, and the fateful words "Hey, we could sell some of these" were uttered. A more systematic approach followed for Targa 2002, with Nick's paintball philosophy of "accuracy through volume" being taken to heart. In excess of 8000 photos were taken during the week, and along with some clever software written by Philip to catalogue the images, the first Ground-Sky CD hit the market.

Since that time Ground-Sky have added photographic prints and posters to their line up, as well as expanding the number and variety of events covered. While our focus remains on classic and historic motorsport, it's not uncommon to see one of the team at Rally New Zealand, Tier 1 circuit racing or even the A1GP.

The Ground-Sky Team

Philip Adamson - Ground-Sky Photography Philip Adamson

Has yet to find a way to stop work interfering with his motorsport. He's been taking race and rally photos for nealy 30 years and has somehow managed to be a competitor, a timekeeper, a sponsor and an organiser as well.

Nick Little - Ground-Sky Photography Nick Little

Has never owned a four-cylinder car. Derives his income from computers and also sits in front of one at race meetings and the Concours. Nick has followed the international rally since he was old enough to ask for the time off work, but didn't really start seriously photographing events until Ground-Sky came along.

Cully Paterson - Ground-Sky Photography Cully Paterson

Has been a petrolhead since birth. By day he's a computer geek, by night he dabbles with turbo-charged engines (and has an extensive collection of Supra head gaskets to prove it). Cully has spent several years involved with race timing, has the odd spell behind the wheel out on the track and knows what Targa looks like from inside the car. He also wrote the website you're looking at, so if anything breaks it's all his fault.

Also Contributing

Caleb MacGregor

Philip found Caleb in a paddock by the side of a Targa stage near Rotorua a few years ago and got talking to him about Photography. It turned out Caleb had a good eye for the world through a lens and he joined the team to augment our offerings for Targa Rotorua 2007 and has covered several Targa events since then.

John Holmes

John has also been taking photographs and writing articles on classic car-related items for around 25 years. At Historic race meetings he prefers to look at the world through the windscreen of his Lotus 18, but when he's not doing that he's never seen without a camera in his hand.

Phil Purdue

Phil works with Nick and Philip and tends to prefer taking photographs of motorbikes racing, but comes out to play with the cars from time-to-time, too. You can view Phil's excellent motorbike focussed work at www.highside.co.nz

Grant Clegg

Grant is a regular Targa competitor but likes to stand trackside with a camera when he gets the chance as well.
